Frequently asked questions about Cosmetic Dentistry
-
Cosmetic dentistry is generally not covered by standard dental insurance since it’s often seen as elective. However, if a procedure also addresses functional issues, such as improving bite or restoring damaged teeth, there may be partial coverage. It’s best to check with your insurance provider for more specific details regarding coverage.
-
Most cosmetic dentistry procedures are not painful, thanks to modern anesthesia and advanced techniques. Any discomfort is typically minimal and temporary. We take care to ensure your comfort throughout the entire process.
-
To be a good candidate for cosmetic dentistry, it helps to have teeth that are mostly healthy, but just imperfect. However, if you do have some dental health issues, those can be addressed and corrected before or in addition to cosmetic procedures. Some procedures serve both dental health and cosmetic purposes at once.
-
Veneers are considered to be a permanent enhancement to your teeth. Your dentist can remove them for you, but once your teeth have been prepped and fitted with veneers, you will need to replace them with new veneers or another restorative option.
-
Good quality porcelain veneers last an average of 10 years, but with good care and maintenance they can last for 20 or more. Porcelain veneers last longer than composite veneers, which may only last about 3 years.
-
You should care for your porcelain veneers the same way you do your natural teeth. Brush twice a day and floss once a day to remove plaque and keep your veneers looking clean. Use a soft bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste to keep from scratching your veneers. Especially avoid any toothpaste that contains baking soda.
-
Yes, you can trust the quality of same day crowns at Maine Dentistry. The reason we are able to offer this option is because we own the advanced technology and equipment necessary to create quality, natural-looking dental crowns in our office.
-
The only way to know for sure is to have an evaluation. We will assess the condition of your tooth and the root to determine whether or not it can be restored with a dental crown. We also consider whether or not this will be the best long term option for you, not just provide a quick fix.
-
On average, a traditional dental bridge will last between 5 and 15 years. It may last even longer with good care and maintenance. An implant supported bridge may last longer than a traditional bridge because it won’t affect your healthy teeth.
-
Partial dentures typically consist of an artificial material that looks like gum tissue that is formed around the artificial teeth. A bridge only consists of artificial teeth that sit against your natural gums. Partial dentures attach to the existing teeth with metal clasps and are removable. A dental bridge is permanent, only removable by your dentist.
